The novel we are reading this month is Away, by Amy Bloom. The protagonist, Lillian Leyb, travels from Russia to New York in 1924, leaving Russia   after her husband and parents are murdered during a pogram (organized massacre of the Jews). During the attack, Lillian’s three year old daughter is lost and Lillian is unable to find her or determine whether she still lives.

Lillian’s life in the United States is a story of survival, strength and redefining of who she is. When Lillian receives a letter from her cousin telling her that Sarah may still be alive, Lillian begins an  unbelievable journey to get back to her daughter.

Bloom writes with wonderful descriptions and  fantastic character development.
